Description
PRICE REDUCTION AGAIN FOR CLASSIC AMERICANA!  RARE "BEARS ON A SPREE" FROM W.H. BEARD GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR UNIQUE PIECE. ITEM HAS NOT BEEN SEEN IN PUBLIC FOR OVER 50 YEARS. Early American Artist William Holbrook Beard, 1824-1900, was famous for painting satirical paintings of animals with human frailities. Beard's animal Bear paintings are very desireable and collectable because they show the seven deadly sins of bad behavior. "On a Spree" show two bears: one bear playfully drunk with wine, almost greedy evidenced by hording the decanter, while snarling at the open arm advances of the other Bear.  The standing Bear extends her arms with the possibility of partaking --sharing, begging -- wanting, desireing the joy and relaxation the wine has to offer.  Grapes litter the foreground, some ripe with possibility others undeveloped...waiting and wanting to be desired and drunk. Beard is famous and coined for giving us the Bulls and Bears market with his humastic depiction of his Bears.  Some say it was this piece that started that trend. Quote from an appraiser at the "Roadshow".... "some of Beard's paintings can sell in excess of $150,000." This painting is a must for both wine lovers and stock market mavens who can relate to Beard's love of bears.  It is original, haunting, vibrant and over 130 years old.  It's been in my family for the past half century. Not only is it signed but It is framed with the "W. Beard" inscribed in wood at the bottom of the frame. It is a classic piece for any art collection.  It is in excellent condition.  The piece is 15 inches x 13.5 w/frame. This is the first time this piece has been offered to art lovers and the general public and we are pricing it to move.
