Description
After twenty years in the business, this is only the second legitimate 19thc mourning painting that I have seen of a child. Based on the early polychrome frame, the manner of dress, colors, and most importantly the face and arms of the child (painted in a very classical american folk art proportion) I would safely estimate this piece at circa 1870. Heavy pastel or gouache, with the deepest red drapes and beautiful cornflower blue dress, the boys eyes are closed as he lay on a white pillow surrounded by gold cord. It could not be any simple or more striking and the condition of the pastel is amazing. There are two extremely slight places that I can see any bit of pastel has ghosted onto the glass and only one place where a bit of loss can be seen (the entire way at the bottom of his dress). It appears (from the back especially) that this had water damage at one time, and there remains a slight wave to the board and a faint water line on the piece. Extremely hard to see, but I'm being hard on it - simply to make sure there are no surprises. Most important to this piece is its sheer size, the image size is 20" x 24" - truly amazing. Frame is two piece construction and has no flaws that I can see. The glass is remarkable, bubbled throughout with one exceptionally large ovoid bubble - again, confirming the age. Please see the photographs and email with questions. It is not a piece to be ignored, for those with an interest in folk art or memorials, this is a banner piece. Buyer pays $25.00 shipping within CONUS. Thanks very much for looking.
