Description
Important hand painted watercolor seascape in brown wash tones. Singed and dated by significant artist Jan Van Goyen 1653. Artist worked in Leiden and was a contemporary to such dutch artist of greatest renound as Rembrant, Gerrit Dou, and Frans Van Mieris. . The artistic guild of Lieden was a remarkable center of painting that produced many of the worlds most significant works of art in this period of history. Van Goyen worked in the specialty field of seascapes and landscapes and many scholarly works have discussed his many significant contributions to art. Somewhat overshadowed by the success of his contemporary masters in the specialties of portrait and genre , Van Goyen is discussed as bringing the art of landscape and seascape to a state of perfection. He was an artist concerned for his own income and devised ways to increase his productivity without any loss to the highest quality standards. His works are estimated to exceed 2000 pieces leaving for the possibility of many undiscoverd paintings and drawings. Van Goyen artworks can be found in an impressive array of museum holdings throughout the world. He was an art collector and dealer and the step father of Jan Steen, another significant dutch artist of this era. The artwork offered here has all the distinctive characteristics of a Van Goyen seascape. He sets a very low horizon line. He paints a distant coast usually with some form of a church tower visible. He works in brown pigments for his paintings. This painting has a heavy tonalist atmosphere that is one of Van Goyen's big contributions of influence to succeeding generations of artist. Size of the paper is 18.4cm x 26.7 , a very tight match in size to other known Van Goyen works on paper found in museums. The signature is entirely correct in handwriting being an excellant match. He draws his #5s like an S. The date of this painting 1653 is in the very final years of Jan's life. He had lost a great deal of money in the tulip bubble and was working through a personal bankruptcy at this time. This may explain why he is using paper here rather than a wood board. This is far more of a finished polished artwork than his average black chalk drawings on paper. The foreground shows incredible detail. You can see wooden clogs on the walking fisherman. His face is only 2mm in size yet amazingly the artist has painted such details as eyes nose and mouth, a level of detail you never see in figures of this size even among the best artists. The paper does not show any laid lines. watermarks, or chain lines. Paper is guaranteed to be from mid 1600. History of papermaking shows that the rag engine essential for the 1700s invention of wove paper was in use in Holland prior to 1670. I have copied below a passage from a book on Jan Van Goyen by Ulrich Beck stating that Van Goyen worked on a variety of papers which proves there were other papers available to this artist than the typical standard laid paper used for drawing. Oil paintings by Van Goyen have sold at auction well into the 100s of thousands of dollars and this is one of his very best works on paper in private hands. This is a unique artwork that does not copy or approximate any known established artwork by Van Goyen in museums or publications. Excellant condition. No tears or restorations. A couple small foxing brown tone spots. As for authenticity, any buyer is purchasing MY expertise and will receive a formal written letter of opinion and a list of professional educational credentials, provenance as per ebay code of conduct for selling and guaranteeing the authenticity of art listings . Any hard facts about the artwork that disprove authenticity entitle a return and full refund. Ask for more details if seriously interested.
