ARTIST'S STATEMENT "The creative necessity of my artwork is the exploration and fabrication of a harmonious syntax; a process of discovery eliciting emergent and emotional introspection. My body of work assimilates and chronicles the complex balance and interplay of chromaticity. The essential materiality of my paintings are their means of visual and sensory conveyance. The depth within the painting surface extends beyond representation, revealing colors and substance that are innately concurrent and inextricable." ---------------------------------------------- self taught/ self study ----------------------------------------------- ABOUT ENCAUSTIC PAINTING Encaustic is the medium, process and technique of painting with pure beeswax, resin and pigment that are fused after application into continuous layers with a variety of heating tools and then fixed to a support with heat. The ancient Greeks developed encaustic painting over 2000 years ago. The word encaustic is derived from the Greek word enkaustikos meaning "to heat" or "burn in" which is the process of fusing the paint. It is perhaps the most beautiful of all artist's paints and is as versatile as any 20th century medium. Encaustc paints are the most durable form of painting evidenced by the the Faiyum mummy portraits in Egypt that have survived over 2000 years without cracking, flaking or fading. The several inherent qualities that allow these works to withstand the test of times is that it is a natural adhesive, it is moisture resistant, mildew and fungus resistant and unappetizing to insects. Wax paints also do not contain solvents or oils so they will not yellow or darken with age, leaving the painting as fresh as the day it was created. These paintings also do not need to be varnished or protected by glass. One of the joys of encaustic is its luminosity. Layers of pigmented wax deliver color in a way no other medium can. For as light passes through those layers and is reflected back up to the surface, the painting is actually illuminated from within. Encaustic paints produce a permanent lusturous appearance yet the painting can be revised or reworked at any time. The process of heating and cooling sets up a dynamic chaos and control unlike that of any other paintingmedium. The encaustic paint film is stable in a temperature range approximatley 40 - 110°F. Very hot days can soften the wax somewhat but will cause no real damage. A paintings can dull or haze over with temperature and/or humidity shifts but the it can always be restored to its beautiful shine with a simple buffing. www.artistsonja.com
